Dedicated Web Hosting - A Better Understanding

ServersDedicated web hosting is a type of internet hosting where the buyer gets full rights to the server. This is different from shared servers, since shared servers usually crowd many customers on the same server- which usually decreases performance. This is where dedicated hosting comes in- which gives the buyer complete performance benefits.

Buyers of a dedicated server will enjoy much more disk space and bandwidth than the normal. In many offers of dedicated servers, bandwidth is not monitored- and is instead dependant upon the server itself. As far as operating systems go, Microsoft charges a fee for their services- so linux based operating systems are usually much cheaper. However, things such as Cpanel require a subscription as well, which is basically a panel for webmasters to manage websites. This goes to show that the operating system is only part of the equation in the software budget.

There are still some limitations, however. For instance, most dedicated server providers do not allow IRC programs- which are usually responsible for denial of service attacks. Porn and spam are also considered to be taboo for dedicated server leases. Past these limitations, dedicated servers are ultimately free of restrictions- provided that everything the customer uses it for is legal.

Management is the downfall to most amateur webmasters. Most hosts demand that the customers take full control over the server, and do not offer too much help in most cases. This usually requires a bit of technology knowledge requirements, as security, firewalls, antivirus, performance, database administration, load balancing, and much more need to be taken care of.

In conclusion, dedicated servers offer a great deal of performance and freedom, as compared to shared hosting. There are even more advanced server packages to be taken advantage of, but these of course cost much more money. For this reason, dedicated hosting and servers remain to be vastly popular among those who run a mildly successful website, and do not wish to spend extra resources on upgrading to higher grade servers.

There are advantages of a dedicated hosting plan but I would say most webmasters are better off using a shared service. Based on my shared plan I figure I could drive in around 5-10 million visitors a month before maxing out my resources. Even then I could buy 10-15 shared plans for the cost of a single dedicated server.

I would imagine 50+ million visitors per month is not a good threshold to switch from shared to dedicated. I think I will start looking for a dedicated host when I hit the 750k neighborhood. For me the switch over is more about affordability. I figure at that point a dedicated plan will not cost a significant % of my earnings.

Do you think this is a good plan? Would you make the switch as soon as it is affordable or would you ride the shared wave to the end?

The way technology is changing, everything is getting cheaper. I believe that choosing shared or dedicated hosting would directly depend on the user’s (webmaster’s) requirements. But I agree with you Dane, shared is better for many webmasters.
